Scott has attended many of the events listed under Social Dancing.  Some events not well attended have benefits of more space, opportunities to dance with dance host more opportunities to be asked to dance especially if leaders or followers are not equal in number.
Other well attended dances often have many exchanging potential partners or many dedicated couples who do not exchange.  Often it is a mix of both.

Bay Area where to dance today  Live Music ,  Social Ballroom dancingSalsa and Bachata
This site is host to music events and social ballroom or Latin events where social dancing  is for more than one hour.  I have tried to separate Latin ( Salsa and Bachata) events from Ballroom which often includes Latin so the size of that page smaller.  80% or more of what is listed here is free or under $25.00   If you want dance lessons visit the individual ballroom studios, web site links are on the social dancing page or check the teacher page for available instructors.  Hip Hop,  Argentine Tango, and large concert events are not represented on this site.  If you join the mailing list or visit the News Letter page  you will get monthly updates on event not listed here such as an event that are only one time and does not reoccur weekly or monthly and new events   cancelations and corrections of existing dances.

I have found that: Dinner dancing events tend to cost more.
Thursday Buri Buri  in So San Francisco plays the most Meringue and Samba's
The Big Band in Millbrae has mostly fox trots and swing dancing
Blue Pheasant in Cupertino is most attended disco event on Friday and Saturday.
Live bands that tend to play at Moose and Elks lodges entertain the older dancers.
Senior centers also events also serve the older dancers.
Lindy hop events tent to be  younger crowds
Vietnam dances play more Pasodoble than other places.
Interest in Salsa and Bachata events are increasing faster that Ballroom events.
Latin events are not often held at community centers, senior centers, Moose Lodges or Elks lodges.
Higher level dancing skills are typically at Ballrooms, multi day Festivals and Showcase events.
Alcohol drinking by dancers is not the primary reason they go.
Many dancers strive to be the best, working on style form and technique.
Many dancers love to come for the social aspects
Many come for the exercise ( why not enjoy physical activities).
Studies have found social dancing improves one's ability to retain brain health.
A draw back of reaching the top of your field is the limited number of other dancer that are at similar level.
A paid dancer to entertain an individual is often referred to a as a taxi driver.
Dance instructors often are paid to accompany dancers to social events so be aware that these are not free to dance with you unless you schedule with them.
Where your jacket or using your phone tells dancers choose another person to dance with.
